2017 Spring The Big Island

D1-D3 Old Town of Kona

  • Airbnb is only one block from the Kona beach and downtown. Walked along the famous Alli Dr to see some local beaches, shopping, historic sites, etc 夏威夷老国王的palace和1820造的教堂
  • Weather wasn't cooperating, was going to stop by Kahaluu Beach Park, but it was closed. Took bus to Sheraton Resort to see some Manta Ray exhibit.
  • 超市的poke选择多的应接不暇,不理解的是酱大蒜比鱼卖的贵。立马买点酱蟹试试
  • Continue to explore beach and sites near by in the morning. Picked rental car after lunch and visited a coffee plantation Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation. Since it was raining, we couldn't explore the farm.

D4-North to Hilo to Star Gazing

  • Waipio Valley Lookout
  • Due to weather, organized star gazing at Mauna Kea was canceled for the night. We waited around until total dark fall to see starts. But IZ wasn't impressed.

D5- A day of beaches!

  • Picked up snorkeling equipment from town and head to the beach.
  • Mauna Kea Beach was supposedly the best beach on the island, but parking was already full when we got there. So we could only go to Hapuna Beach which turned out to be really nice
  • Went to Queensmarket for lunch before heading to Anaeho'omalu Beach for some snorkeling. IZ even swam with a sea turtle for a while.
  • On the way back stopped by Kiholo Bay, but didn't see any sea turtle
  • After some rest in the B&B, took a sunset cruise to snorkel with Manta Ray

D6 - Southern Tip

  • Pu'uhonua O Honaunau for another snorkeling. By far, this beach has the most fish!
  • Green Sand Beach wasn't too accessible to general public. We had to take a extremely bumpy ride with a Hawaii native guide. But it was a lot of fun.
  • Black Sand beach was also very unique but it was very very hot.
  • Arrived in Volcano area before dusk, and went to see the bubbling Volcano after dark.

D7: All about Volcano

Spent all day driving and hiking around the Volcano National Park

D8: Exploring more

  • Lava Tree Mounument
  • Ahalanui County Beach Park - so much fun of snorkeling in this warm water pool
  • Reached the end of Kaimu-Chain of Crate Road and planned to see the area where lava drops into the sea, but it was too much work and too hot. IZ wasn't up for the 8-miles journey.

D9: Last day!

  • Stopped by Greenwell Coffee Plantation before heading to the airport
