DAY1: Arrived in Jakarta after 11pm via HK. As we were approaching Jakarta airport, tropical thunders cracked loudly while lightening lit up the dark sky around the airplane. I was quite nervous for a bit while boys slept soundly next to me.
DAY2: Took morning train toward Yogyakarta. After a while, the scenery became repetitive with rice fields, hills, mountains, villages, and tropical landscape. Arrived Phoenix Hotel near dusk.
DAY3: Took local transportation 印尼特色三轮车 called Becak to go around small town of Yogyakarta, visited Sultan Palace(根本无法和曼谷皇宫媲美), 苏丹水宫Water Castle/Taman Sari. Had lunch at Ndalem Ngabean (old Prince Palace改建的酒店), then visited local wax painting artist, and wood puppet workshop where we bought a pair of puppets. Tried to visit the local traditional market, but it was too many people and too humid, so went back to hotel for AC and swimming.
DAY4:
After a scrumptious breakfast buffet at the hotel, we hired a car to visit the Parangtritis beach which was < 2hrs away. Passing more central Java country side along the way. Beach and water were very clean, but the area was very under-developed. Kids had tons of fun body surfing regardless of the heat and wouldn't leave for a long time.
DAY6:
After breakfast visited coffee plantation, stable, vegetable garden, roamed the resort grounds, and walked around the nearby villages. Thunder storm started again in the afternoon, so kids played in the big bath tub. After the afternoon tea, we did the special hammam and Javanese message which were very refreshing and rejuvenating.
DAY7:
Hired a car to visit Dieng Plateau (Dieng is the second largest highland in the world 2000m above sea level, after Nepal) area which is 2.5hr away. Unfortunately it was drizzling and raining so we couldn't see much along the way, but from the area supposedly looked amazing according to the tourism film.
Returned back to the hotel after some bumpy rides in the rain. Kids swim more while we did another spa充电.
DAY8:
Returning back to Yogyakarta to Prambanan which is 17km west of town. After visiting few temple ruins in the area, we checked into Sheraton. The room was upgraded to a pool room where we had tons of fun playing in the pool in heavy downpour. Tried local dinner, Gudeg鸡和豆腐, at a nearby restaurant.
DAY9:
Finally saw the volcano which was hidden the clouds yesterday. Took a quick 45-minutes flight (airport right across from Sheraton) back to Jakarta. There was really not much to say about Jakarta other than it's just another polluted, crowded metropolitan city.
Boys stayed in for swimming while I hit a few shopping malls nearby. Had dinner at local food court. Red-eye flight out of Jakarta.
